The Syracuse Children’s Chorus concludes its 31st concert season with Visions of Peace. At the season finale performance, the Syracuse Children’s Chorus will share the stage with singers and instrumentalists from the Imagine Syracuse Young Musicians Project for a concert on May 6, 2012 at 4:00pm at Hendricks Chapel on the Syracuse University Campus, highlighting the themes of friendship and community.

Through a series of workshops in January, February, and March facilitated by composer Paola Marquez, artist Vanessa Johnson, African dance instructor Yesutor Kotoka-Wiley, Ghanaian traditional drummer Etse Nyadedzor, poet Rachel Guido deVries, and InterFaith Works of Central New York, students in the Syracuse Children’s Chorus and the Imagine Syracuse Young Musicians Project had an opportunity to talk about their perception of peace and conflict in their lives while writing poetry, creating mixed media works of art, and learning traditional African dance and drumming. The music, poetry and visual art generated from these workshops has inspired an original composition and interactive art exhibit to be featured during the May 6th concert. Accompanied by pianist Sabine Krantz, the Chorus will share the stage with singers from the Imagine Syracuse Young Musicians Project to perform a varied repertoire of musical selections featuring the music they helped to create, Voices of Peace, by local composer Paola Marquez.

The Imagine Syracuse Young Musicians Project, in partnership with Cathedral Academy at Pompei (CAP) located on Syracuse’s North Side, seeks to use classical orchestral and vocal music training to strengthen inner city education, helping children build better lives and healthy communities. CAP students and families originate from more than 17 countries and many speak two or more languages. Most of these families are refugees who fled their countries because of war, famine, and natural disasters.

Advance sale prices for individual tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for children and seniors in General Admission Seating and $19 for adults and $17 for children and seniors in Priority Seating. Group rates are available. Tickets will also be available at the door the day of the concert for $18 for adults and $16 for children and seniors in General Admission Seating only. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact the Syracuse Children’s Chorus office at 315.478.0582, by e-mail at SCCInfo@SyracuseChildrensChorus.org, or visit our website at www.SyracuseChildrensChorus.org.

This concert is made possible with support from The Central New York Community Foundation, The Cultural Resources Council, the Helen R. Brady Memorial Trust, National Grid, Community Bank N.A., InterFaith Works of Central New York and the Young Singers Foundation. The Syracuse Children’s 2011-2012 concert season is sponsored in part by Driver’s Village.

Ms. Mowery has been selected as one of eight conducting fellows to participate in the Transient Glory Conducting Symposium in New York City in February. Conducting fellows as well as 60 guest auditors will work with the Young People’s Chorus of New York City Founder and Artistic Director, Francisco Núnez, visiting guest artists Grant Gershon from Los Master Chorale, Janet Galván from Ithaca College and Philip Brunelle of VocalEssence, as well as eight contemporary composers. Each conductor will be paired with a composer for an in-depth study of a recently-composed work for young voices.

The culmination of this event is the opportunity for each conductor to conduct the Young People’s Chorus of New York City in a performance at Carnegie Hall. Ms. Mowery has been selected for the rare opportunity to conduct on two separate occasions during the symposium, both at Carnegie Hall and Le Poisson Rouge.
